Home of a Great Kerala Pooram

Set among paddy fields near Wadakkanchery, Uthralikavu Sree Rudhiramahakali Kavu is dedicated to the goddess Kali. Most of
the year it is a calm village shrine. Every February or March it hosts the Uthralikavu Pooram, with caparisoned elephants, thundering
percussion and fireworks, one of the most spectacular festivals in Thrissur district.

Good to know

The goddess

The temple is dedicated to Rudhiramahakali, a fierce form of the goddess, and was originally known as Rudhiramahakali Kavu. Its main shrine, Mullakkal Sreemoolasthanam, is unusual: the sanctum is open to the sky.

Held every February or March, the festival brings out 33 caparisoned elephants, Panchavadyam and Pandimelam
orchestras, and a fireworks display. It draws huge crowds, so arrive early and plan your transport.

The temple sits among green paddy fields, with a sister shrine, Machad Thiruvanikavu, about 4 km away. On ordinary days it is peaceful and well worth an early-morning visit.

Wear modest, traditional clothing where possible, leave shoes outside, and ask before photographing rituals. Some areas may be restricted to Hindu devotees
