The word Ayurveda is Sanskrit for “life-knowledge” and over the centuries has been developed into a therapy which focuses on living in balance and harmony with nature. This practice, which originated in India, brings together mind, body and spirit, through a holistic view, which considers that these elements influence each other. Ayurveda has become an internationally renowned alternative health practice, which is based on complex herbal compounds and oils. The plant-based treatments are derived from roots, leaves, fruits, bark, or seeds. Commonly used ingredients include cardamom, cinnamon as well as tulsi-flower (holy basil). Qualified Ayurveda therapists usually undertake a detailed consultation with their clients and administer treatments, which range from therapeutic massages to more rigorous modes of toxic elimination. Treatments employ the use of natural remedies as well as holistic metaphysical concepts to align the individual’s life to harmonic and healthy principles. Ayurveda is rooted in ancient traditions which aim to balance the various elements within the individual, bringing together comfort, well-being, massage, diet and exercise.
